Highland Cattle are probably the most recognisable breed of cattle in the world, with their thick shaggy coat and long powerful horns.

They origonated from the Highlands & western Isles of Scotland and evolved to survive the inhospitable climate. They are sometimes known as Kyleos because of their ability to swim the narrow straights of water between islands known as Kyles, to find fresh grazing.

Their long thick coat is actually two layers, a long outer to shed the rain and a thick wooly under to keep them warm. Bulls have horns that go out and forward whilst cows go out und upwards. The females are extremely good mothers, and care must be taken when they have calved, as they are very protective of their offspring. There are six recognised colours, black, brindle, red, yellow, dun, & white. Red is the most common which most people will be familiar with.
